Job Purpose
The AI Engineer Intern will assist in developing innovative new products to solve problems using AI techniques, such as Machine Learning and Deep Learning to drive AI advancements in new product development and provide continual refinement of existing products. Generating software systems derived from various Machine Learning (ML) techniques to drive innovation. Generating software systems derived from various Deep Learning techniques to improve usability.

Summer interns work full-time (40 hours per week) from May through August. Candidates must be currently enrolled college students actively pursuing a degree to participate in the internship program.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and deploy software systems incorporating classical machine learning techniques to solve well-scoped engineering and product problems.
- Develop and integrate deep learning models (CNNs, transformers, and other architectures as appropriate) into production software, including training, evaluation, and inference pipelines.
- Implement data preprocessing, feature engineering, and augmentation pipelines, and support model optimization for target hardware through techniques such as quantization, pruning, and format conversion (e.g., ONNX, TensorRT, TFLite).
- Contribute as an active member of a Scrum team, delivering working, tested software within each sprint and participating in planning, estimation, and retrospectives.
- Write, review, and document software using test-driven development (TDD), including unit, integration, and regression tests, with an emphasis on reproducibility and maintainable code.
- Build automated test environments, simulation frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines to validate model and system behavior across releases.
- Conduct manual and bench testing, and prepare software builds and configurations for field deployment and customer installation.
- Support end users through software troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, defect resolution, and technical training.
- Research and evaluate algorithms, libraries, datasets, and third-party tools relevant to assigned projects, and make evidence-based recommendations.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to gather, clarify, and communicate technical and data requirements.
- Support software asset management, including dependency tracking, licensing, and maintenance contracts.
- Prepare and present technical reports, metrics, and recommendations to engineering and stakeholder audiences.
- Participate in continuous improvement of team tooling, processes, and engineering standards.
Experience Required
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field (or a Bachelor's degree with equivalent relevant experience).
- Proficiency in C++ (modern C++11/14/17 or later), including familiarity with memory management, concurrency, and performance-conscious development.
- Programming experience in Python, particularly within the ML/scientific stack (e.g., NumPy, PyTorch or TensorFlow, scikit-learn).
- Working understanding of machine learning and deep learning fundamentals, including model training, evaluation metrics, and common failure modes.
- Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows.
- Familiarity with software testing practices and CI/CD concepts.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, both written and verbally.
