Job Purpose
The Plant Quality Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining quality assurance programs, systems, and procedures to ensure conformance of components and finished products to established engineering specifications, regulatory requirements, and CNH quality standards. This position plays a critical role in driving product quality improvements, preventing defects, supporting manufacturing operations, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
The Plant Quality Engineer will work closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Supplier Quality teams to identify, investigate, and resolve quality concerns while promoting a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. This is a plant-based position requiring daily engagement on the manufacturing floor, supporting assembly operations and proactively preventing quality issues from reaching production lines.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Systems and Product Assurance
- Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance programs, inspection methods, and control plans to ensure compliance with product specifications and quality standards.
- Establish and maintain quality standards for current products, manufacturing processes, and services.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on product quality, process capability, and manufacturing performance.
- Monitor key quality metrics and identify opportunities for corrective and preventive actions.
Problem Solving and Corrective Actions
- Identify, investigate, and report quality issues occurring during manufacturing and assembly operations.
- Lead root cause analysis activities using structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, PDCA, DMAIC, Fishbone, and 5 Why analysis.
- Determine sources of product and process variation and implement sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
- Verify corrective-action effectiveness and ensure long-term issue resolution.
- Support containment activities and coordinate cross-functional teams during quality incidents.
Measurement Systems and Metrology
- Develop, program, validate, and maintain quality inspection routines and measurement programs.
- Operate and program advanced inspection equipment, including ROMER arms, laser scanners, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
- Analyze dimensional inspection results and recommend process and product improvements.
- Support measurement system analysis (MSA), gauge studies, and capability assessments.
GD&T and Dimensional Quality
- Serve as a technical expert in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Interpret engineering drawings and dimensional requirements to ensure compliance with design intent.
- Support Engineering and Manufacturing teams in applying GD&T principles to improve manufacturability and inspection effectiveness.
- Provide training and guidance on dimensional quality best practices.
PPAP and Supplier Quality Support
- Review and approve Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submissions.
- Evaluate dimensional reports, capability studies, control plans, PFMEAs, and supporting documentation.
- Support supplier quality initiatives and collaborate with suppliers to resolve quality issues and improve product performance.
- Participate in supplier issue resolution and launch readiness activities as required.
Manufacturing Quality Support
- Spend the majority of working time on the manufacturing floor supporting assembly operations.
- Act as the quality representative for assigned production areas.
- Collaborate directly with manufacturing teams to identify and eliminate quality risks before they affect production.
- Support new product introductions, process changes, and manufacturing launches through proactive quality planning and risk mitigation.
- Ensure quality concerns are identified and addressed at the point of occurrence.
Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a manufacturing quality engineering role.
- Demonstrated experience in a heavy equipment, automotive, agricultural equipment, or similar manufacturing environment.
- Advanced knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience programming and operating ROMER arms, laser scanners, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
- Proven experience leading root cause investigations and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience with PPAP approval processes and quality documentation.
- Strong understanding of statistical methods, process capability, and measurement systems analysis.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or equivalent certification.
- Experience with Minitab or other statistical analysis software.
- Knowledge of APQP, PFMEA, Control Plans, SPC, and MSA.
- Experience supporting assembly operations in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
- Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement experience.
