Job Purpose

The function will report  to Mfg Engineering Europe Manager

The Technical Lead MES & Industrial Controls is responsible for defining, governing and evolving the plant’s automation and digital architecture, ensuring seamless IT/OT integration across PLC systems, MES platforms, product structures (pBOM), cycle management systems and cloud-based analytics environments.
The role connects shopfloor automation with digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 initiatives, enabling standardized PLC data models, reliable cloud-based KPI computation, predictive maintenance and AI-driven applications.

This position requires deep expertise in controls engineering, MES governance, PLC data modeling, IT/OT convergence and cross-functional technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Automation & IT/OT Architecture

• Define and maintain the automation reference architecture across assembly lines (PLC/IPC systems, HMI standards, device connectivity, industrial PC-based manual stations).
• Ensure robust integration between Level 1 automation (PLC), Level 2 MES and enterprise systems (SAP/pBOM, quality systems, cycle management).
• Standardize PLC implementations and enforce corporate data model structures (e.g., DB126) for consistent machine data interpretation.

MES Governance & Line Digitalization

• Lead Level 2 MES configuration, template creation and deployment across new lines and product evolutions.
• Provide accurate cycles, dressing data and work instructions from MES to the line PLC to guarantee consistent process execution.
• Coordinate MES consultants and support updates required by product changes, variants or line upgrades.
• Oversee the evolution of industrial PC-based manual stations with guided workflows and integrated tooling.

 Cloud Integration & Industry 4.0 Enablement

• Contribute to the architecture and deployment of the plant-to-cloud platform, enabling structured machine data acquisition from edge → ingestion → analytics.
• Support cloud-based KPI computation, monitoring dashboards, predictive maintenance and data-driven use cases.
• Ensure end-to-end data integrity and standardized machine/process data structures for cloud analytics and AI-driven applications.

Quality & Traceability

• Quality & Process Data (MES): Ensure that MES manages quality records, process data and provides correct cycles and dressing data to line PLCs, enabling compliant and repeatable production execution.
• Component Traceability: Own and maintain component traceability across MES, PLC, pBOM and cycle management systems, ensuring accurate tracking of assemblies and production steps.

Supplier Management & Project Leadership

• Co-define RFQs and technical specifications for new lines and retrofits.
• Evaluate and coordinate OEM suppliers for PLC, MES and automation system updates.
• Oversee FAT/SAT, installation, commissioning and SOP readiness; approve electrical and pneumatic schematics.
• Operate within a matrix budget structure, collaborating with Manufacturing, Methodology, IT and Digital functions.

 Cross-Functional Technical Leadership

• Act as key technical interface between Controls, Manufacturing Engineering, IT/OT teams, Digital/AI teams and suppliers.
• Coordinate hybrid teams (direct and indirect) involved in automation, MES and cloud integration activities.
• Translate industrial requirements into scalable, reliable and future-proof digital solutions.

• Fluent English, other languages will be an assets
• PLC and controls engineering (Siemens TIA Portal, CC716; Rockwell Logix)
• MES platforms (PMS, OMS, GEM, Level 2 systems)
• IT/OT protocols: OPC UA, MQTT, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Snap7, REST APIs
• Cloud & digital platforms: Azure (Kubernetes, Fabric, Event Hub/Grid), Power Platform
• Robotics & automation: ABB, FANUC, KUKA, Mitsubishi, Denso
• Data modeling for manufacturing analytics
• Industrial PC-based manual stations & operator guidance systems

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science Engineering
• 7+ years experience in automation, MES and digital manufacturing in automotive or similar industries
