Intern Program Overview

We are committed to building a strong talent pipeline by investing in early career professionals. Summer interns work full-time (40 hours per week) from May through August. Candidates must be currently enrolled college students actively pursuing a degree to participate in the internship program.

Job Purpose

The Controls Engineering Intern supports the development of next-generation control algorithms for the Performance Controls team. Working alongside experienced controls engineers, the intern will design, simulate, implement, and tune control systems that solve complex machine performance problems, contributing to active product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of next-generation control algorithms for paving and machine performance applications.
  • Build and execute simulations (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) to model plant and machine behavior, validate algorithm performance, and evaluate design trade-offs prior to hardware testing.
  • Tune and calibrate control systems on test benches and machines, analyzing test data to improve stability, responsiveness, and repeatability.
  • Collaborate with electronics, software, systems, and product teams to ensure controls solutions meet functional, performance, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Document methods, results, and recommendations, and present findings to the engineering team at the conclusion of the internship.

Experience Required

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree (rising senior) or Master's degree in Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or project experience in feedback control theory (PID, state-space, system identification, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink; familiarity with C/C++ or Python for algorithm implementation and data analysis preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills, with the ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams.

Pay Transparency

The annual salary for this role is USD $19.57 - $35.02 plus any applicable bonus (Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as skill, experience and qualification for the role.)

For roles open across multiple locations, the salary range indicated refers to the primary location. If a different location is considered, the applicable salary range will be communicated to candidates prior to the first interview.
